Misconceptions Vs. Realities of Winter Tree Work

Most people do not associate the winter season with shrubbery, trees, or landscaping. When it comes to the frigid New England winters, the outdoors often seems off-limits to any and all possible activities. However, you’d be surprised to know that this is one of many misconceptions about your yard in the winter.

Misconception:

When it comes to landscaping, snow and ice removal is the most that can be done in winter.

Reality:

Contrary to what many may think, the winter season can actually be a very beneficial time for tree services. Arborists have many more options when it comes to arbor care during this frosty season.

Misconception:

Cold winter months prevent arborists from being able to carry out the typical tree services they can offer in the warmer seasons.

Reality:

Once the ground has frozen and becomes hard, it actually provides a layer of protection for the roots and surrounding vegetation. If a tree needs to be trimmed or removed, the cold and frozen soil prevents a lot of movement around the tree, and therefore has a low impact. Additionally, winter is actually best for yard enhancement tree removal. Since most people spend the winter months inside, it is less of an inconvenience to have equipment come in and remove trees in the colder months.

Misconception:

Trees should not be trimmed, pruned, or disturbed in the winter because it will prevent, or damage, their growth.

Reality:

Most trees can actually benefit from a light pruning in the winter because it helps to focus its energy for growth in the warmer Spring season. (towards the end of winter is the best time for this)

Misconception:

Due to the weather and low temperatures, tree work is much more expensive to have done in the winter.

Reality:

During the winter months, there can be around a 10-20% savings on tree services.
